The campaign, which quickly drew applause and a surge in users for Anthropic, taps into growing public concerns about the commercialization of AI tools that many people rely on for advice and assistance.

Meanwhile, across the AI landscape, OpenAI has begun testing advertisements within its flagship product, ChatGPT, with a select group of users in the United States. According to OpenAI, any ads introduced will be clearly labeled, separated from the core responses, and accompanied by robust privacy protections and user controls. Experts note that while the fears are valid, advertising in AI may not be as disruptive as it seems, given the prevalence of targeted ads elsewhere online. “In many ways, ads based on our interactions with AI aren’t such a big leap from the kinds of targeted advertising that already dominate search engines, social media feeds and e-commerce platforms,” writes Damian Radcliffe, a senior research fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, in an analysis published on The Conversation. Radcliffe argues that if implemented transparently, such ads could enhance user experience by streamlining tasks.

OpenAI’s testing phase, limited to a small user group, aims to address these concerns head-on. The company has promised that ads will be matched to the ongoing conversation, potentially drawing from past chats and ad interactions, but users will have options to dismiss them, understand the reasoning behind their appearance, and delete related data. This setup is designed to prioritize relevance over invasive tracking, a departure from traditional digital advertising methods that rely on cookies and cross-site data collection.

For instance, in a hypothetical scenario outlined by Radcliffe, a user querying ChatGPT for “two easy Mexican dishes” and their ingredients might receive recipe suggestions followed by a clearly labeled ad for a local supermarket delivery service tailored to those exact items. “Instead of jumping between tabs, the user moves straight from decision to action,” Radcliffe explains, highlighting the potential for convenience in what he terms “contextual” advertising.

This model could extend to more interactive formats, functioning like a virtual shop assistant. OpenAI envisions sponsored listings that allow users to engage directly within the chat—for example, inquiring about hotel availability, cancellation policies, or costs for a group trip without leaving the conversation. “Done well, this could reduce frustration and curb misleading advertising, because people can challenge vague claims and ask for specifics before spending money,” Radcliffe notes.

Yet, the introduction of ads raises broader questions about access and equity in the AI era. Worldwide, approximately one in six people now use generative AI tools, but adoption remains uneven, exacerbating the digital divide between wealthier and poorer nations. In emerging economies, where students, job seekers, and small organizations stand to benefit most from affordable AI access, high operational costs could limit availability if not offset by alternative funding like advertising.

Anthropic’s ad-free stance, while appealing, may not be scalable for all players in the industry. Radcliffe points out that a small paying subscriber base cannot indefinitely shoulder the financial load, drawing parallels to how free users on platforms like YouTube, search engines, and news sites indirectly contribute through ad exposure. “A light, clearly labelled ad model is one way the wider user base could contribute indirectly,” he writes.

Privacy advocates and users have expressed skepticism, fearing that even well-intentioned ads could blur the lines between genuine advice and commercial promotion. The Anthropic campaign plays directly into this anxiety, portraying rival AIs as susceptible to corporate sway. However, OpenAI maintains that safeguards will prevent ads from influencing core recommendations, with ongoing testing to monitor and mitigate risks.

As the tests progress, the full implications remain under observation. Currently confined to a limited U.S. audience, the rollout’s success will depend on user feedback and the effectiveness of promised controls. Radcliffe cautions that “the full extent of those risks cannot yet be observed or properly assessed,” emphasizing the need for vigilance in this early stage.
