The season one finale of Boston Blue delivered a dramatic cliffhanger that left fans wondering about the fate of one key character. On Friday, May 22, the episode saw Lena, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, survive a shooting only to face further turmoil when her boyfriend Brian's car was deliberately rammed into the ocean.
Showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis discussed the aftermath in an interview with Us Weekly. They explained that season two will open with a time jump to address Lena's medical recovery from nerve damage that briefly left her in a wheelchair.
"There is a little bit of a time jump when we come into the season, which gets us past the medical leave that Lena faces to heal from her injuries," Sonnier said. The producers noted that the incident becomes a central mystery for Lena, Danny, and the extended Reagan and Silver families.
"That does become a driving force in Lena and Danny’s life — and the rest of the Reagans and the Silvers," Sonnier added. "We do find that person at some point and we do unravel that there is something larger going on."
The finale also featured returns from Blue Bloods characters, including Will Hochman as Joe Hill and Marisa Ramirez as Baez. Danny and Baez reconciled and discussed moving in together before the episode ended on a hopeful note for their relationship.
Margolis confirmed Baez will appear in season two. "All we can say is Baez will be back in season two," he said. "We enjoy Marisa and the two of them as a couple light up the screen."
Regarding Brian's apparent fate, the producers remained coy. "We’ve enjoyed working with him this season. If the opportunity for him to be on season 2 is there, we would jump at it," Margolis stated. "But it’s called a cliffhanger for a reason."
Hochman’s cameo came together quickly after Donnie Wahlberg learned his former costar was already in town. Margolis described it as a fitting parallel to Lena’s storyline about discovering new family members.
The executive producers extended an open invitation to other Blue Bloods alumni. Sonnier emphasized that any return by Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan would require the right story for the characters involved.
"It’s a big move and we want to make sure we’re telling the right story," Sonnier said. "It has to be the right story for Frank and that it’s the right story for Danny and for Sean."
Looking ahead, the duo expressed interest in further exploring Boston and the relationships within the blended families. They also left the door open to potential spinoffs if the right opportunity arises.
"If the opportunity presents itself and there’s the right story to tell .. absolutely. We love it," they noted when asked about ideas like a medical drama set in the same universe.
Season two promises to resolve the car crash mystery while deepening ties between the Reagans and the new Boston-based characters. Fans can expect more crossovers and relationship developments as the series continues.
