Comedy Gives Back Promotes Zoe Friedman To Executive Director (EXCLUSIVE)

Comedy Gives Back has elevated co-founder Zoe Friedman to Executive Director to lead fundraising and strategic growth. The move follows a recent benefit show that raised funds for comedian support services.

Comedy Gives Back has promoted Zoe Friedman to the role of Executive Director, tasking her with guiding the nonprofit through its next stage of expansion and ensuring continued support for comedians facing financial, mental health, and recovery challenges.

The organization, which offers a safety net for the comedy community, made the announcement this week. Friedman, a co-founder alongside Amber J Lawson and Jodi Lieberman, will now lead all fundraising efforts and work to align strategic initiatives while monitoring program impact.

"Zoe brings both strategy and soul to her role as Executive Director," said Dave Becky, a board member and partner at 3 Arts Entertainment. "She’s not only addressing today’s needs—she’s building a sustainable future for comedians who will rely on this organization for years to come."

Jimmy Miller, founder and CEO of Mosaic Media Group, echoed that assessment. "In an industry without traditional safety nets, Zoe Friedman is helping to build one," Miller said. "She recognizes the urgency of this work and is leading with both purpose and precision."

Friedman’s ties to comedy run deep. Her parents, Budd and Silver Friedman, opened The Original Improvisation, where she watched early performances by comedians including Andy Kaufman, Richard Pryor, Bette Midler, Robert Klein, and Richard Lewis.

She began her professional career at the Late Show with David Letterman, where she booked emerging talents such as Dave Chappelle, Mitch Hedberg, and Jim Gaffigan. Later, at Comedy Central, she helped develop series including Crank Yankers and Important Things with Demetri Martin.

The promotion comes shortly after the group’s 2026 Alt Comedy All-Stars benefit show, held April 22 at the Montálban Theatre in Los Angeles. The event featured Bob Odenkirk and the cast of Mr. Show, along with Patton Oswalt, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Laura Kightlinger, and other guests. All ticket proceeds supported the nonprofit’s programs.

Comedy Gives Back provides financial crisis relief, mental health therapy, chemical dependency treatment sponsorship, and broader community support for stand-up comedians. Friedman’s new responsibilities include tracking the effectiveness of these services to better anticipate future needs.

Officials said the organization aims to remain a lasting resource as the comedy industry evolves. Friedman’s background in both live performance spaces and television development is expected to inform her approach to growth and outreach.

Board members have highlighted her ability to combine operational strategy with a personal understanding of the challenges comedians face. The group continues to rely on benefit events and donations to sustain its work.

According to the announcement, Friedman will focus on long-term planning while maintaining immediate services. The nonprofit has positioned itself as a key support system in a field that often lacks traditional benefits or safety nets.

Industry observers note that such organizations have grown in importance following increased awareness of mental health and financial pressures within entertainment. Friedman’s elevation reflects an effort to professionalize and expand those efforts.

The group’s leadership expressed confidence that her experience will help secure additional funding and partnerships. Details on upcoming initiatives are expected in the coming months.
