As Demi Lovato embarks on her U.S. tour for her latest album It's Not That Deep later this month, her husband, musician Jordan Lutes—known professionally as Jutes—is preparing for his own demanding schedule of European and North American tours. In an exclusive interview with E! News, the 35-year-old Canadian artist opened up about the challenges of being apart during what would have been their first wedding anniversary, admitting the separation feels particularly tough just months after tying the knot last May.
"It’s one of those things where we get sad when we talk about it," Jutes said. "So we’re like, ‘We won’t think about it yet.’ It’s gonna be tough, there’s no way around that." He expressed hope that such scheduling conflicts won't repeat, calling the situation "really sucks." Despite the distance, Jutes remains optimistic, planning to celebrate their milestone once both tours conclude. "We’re just gonna pretend," he explained. "As soon as tour is over and we’re together, we’re gonna celebrate and that’ll be awesome. It’s part of the job and we’ll just have to FaceTime a ton and figure it out. We’ll get through it."
Jutes' European tour is set to kick off on May 2, where he'll perform his latest single "Disassociate," released on March 25, along with tracks from his previous two albums. He described touring as his favorite aspect of being an artist, emphasizing the irreplaceable energy of live audiences. "People coming to the show is by far the most important thing to me," he said. "Streams and numbers on a screen are cool and metrics are cool to see that things are growing, but nothing is going to replace showing up and a bunch of fans being there singing your songs."
The North American leg, titled Smile You’re On Tour, begins in August and marks the biggest production of Jutes' career. He funds his tours independently, relying on ticket sales and merchandise from previous outings to scale up each time. "I tour out of pocket," Jutes noted. "For the fans out there, when they buy tickets to the tour or buy merch, they are funding directly the next tour. And I do everything out of my own pocket when it comes to touring. For me, every time we get to this next level, I take what we made on the last tour and I’m like, ‘This is what we have to level up this next tour.’"
While Jutes will miss Lovato—his self-proclaimed No. 1 fan—during her month-long U.S. tour, he highlighted their mutual support as a cornerstone of their relationship. "She believes in me more than I believe in myself," he shared. "Beyond me being in love with her, [she] is one of the most talented human beings on planet Earth. So when someone that talented believes in you, it feels good and it fuels you." Jutes added that they thrive on each other's successes, saying, "We love to see each other win—seeing her win makes me feel better than seeing myself win."
Nearly a year into their marriage, Jutes described their bond as surprisingly harmonious, defying common narratives about wedded life. "You hear all these stories like, ‘Marriage is tough,’" he detailed. "And ‘You’re gonna fight and that’s just part of marriage.’ And I’m like, not for me. I keep getting surprised by like, ‘Is that supposed to be happening? Should we pretend to fight or something?’" He said the feeling is reciprocal, noting he falls "more and more in love" with Lovato every day. Looking ahead, Jutes is eager for more quality time, stating, "I’m looking forward to falling more in love and hanging out with my best friend all the time."
The couple's romance began publicly in December 2022 with a Disneyland date, where they were photographed kissing near Sleeping Beauty's Castle, four months after going official. That same month, they shared holiday moments, and by January 2023, Lovato posted Instagram photos from a New Year's trip to the San Gorgonio Wilderness in Southern California, captioning them, "Ended the new year like this... Wishing you all the best for 2023."
Valentine's Day 2023 brought public displays of affection, with Lovato sharing a kissing photo and writing, "Life has become so enriched by you... I’m so beyond grateful to have found my person in you. Falling asleep and waking up next to my best friend has made me so filled w joy I can’t even begin to explain.. my best friend, soul mate, twin flame, honeybun.. and the list goes on… the fun and laughs never stop w you.. I can be my weirdest goofy self and you never judge me." She continued, "Thank you for making me the happiest lil thing on earth.. happy first Valentines day together.. I love you @jutesmusic."
The pair made their red carpet debut that February at the Grammy Salute to Industry Icons Honoring Julie Greenwald and Craig Kallman in Beverly Hills, where they shared kisses and posed together. Later that month, they attended a Milwaukee Bucks versus Los Angeles Clippers game at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, capturing sweet moments including a kiss and a mirror selfie during a romantic getaway.
In March 2023, Lovato celebrated Jutes' birthday on Instagram, calling him her "sweet angel" and writing, "I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate you because I couldn’t be more in love with your gorgeous, funny, sexy, talented self... I’ve waited my whole life to find you and I can’t wait to celebrate so many more birthdays together.. you’re a literal dream come true and I’m so grateful to call you mine. Have the best birthday my love.. you deserve it, the world, and more!!!! Here’s to many more. I LOVE YOU."
April 2023 saw them at Operation Smile's Celebrity Ski & Smile Challenge in Park City, Utah, looking effortlessly cool for spring. By July 2023, Jutes joined Lovato in Philadelphia for her performance at the Wawa Welcome America Festival over the July 4 holiday.
Their engagement came on December 16, 2023, in Los Angeles, where Jutes proposed with a pear-shaped diamond ring, followed by a family celebration at a restaurant. In July 2024, they expanded their family with a blonde-haired puppy named Pickle, after one of Lovato's favorite foods; she announced on Instagram, “Meet our new son pickle.”
Marking one year engaged on December 16, 2024, Jutes posted on his Instagram Stories, “1 year of being engaged to my favorite person... I’m so lucky and can’t wait to marry u baby.” Lovato replied, “My sweet angel... I love you infinitely and cannot wait to call you my husband!!! Happy 1 year of being engaged baby!!”
Valentine's Day 2025 featured more loving posts, with Lovato captioning photos, “Jordan, I cannot WAIT to marry you!! I’m obsessed with your heart, your love and your light. I can’t wait to grow old with you and start a family together.” In May 2025, just two weeks before their wedding, Lovato reflected on their serendipitous meeting in a TikTok montage, writing, “The butterfly effect is crazy because what if we were never set up in that writing session together.”
Though the upcoming tours will test their young marriage, Jutes and Lovato's story underscores the resilience of their partnership, built on shared creativity and unwavering support. As both artists navigate their careers, fans can expect continued glimpses into their life together, from tour updates to family milestones. With Jutes' tours funding future endeavors and Lovato's album promotion in full swing, the couple's ability to balance love and ambition remains a source of inspiration for their followers.
