Douglas McCain, the eldest son of Sen. John McCain, dies at 66

Douglas McCain, eldest son of the late Sen. John McCain, has died at age 66. Family members and the McCain Institute shared tributes highlighting his Navy service and personal qualities.

Douglas McCain, the eldest son of the late Sen. John McCain, died suddenly on May 20 at the age of 66, according to his family.

His sister Meghan McCain announced the news on social media, expressing deep sadness over her brother's passing. "I am deeply saddened to share the news of my brother Doug McCain's sudden passing," she wrote.

Meghan McCain described her brother as a supportive figure throughout her life. "He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humor, fun and great conversation to every room," she said. "I will cherish our memories together."

Douglas McCain had served in the Navy for six years, flying A-6 Intruders, before transitioning to a career as a pilot with American Airlines. His obituary noted the sudden nature of his death, though no further details on the cause were provided by the family.

The McCain Institute also issued a statement on Saturday, noting that McCain "will be remembered as a patriot and friend to the many alumni of Sen. McCain's Institute, campaigns & Senate staff."

John McCain, Douglas's father, had a distinguished military career and later served in the Senate until his death in 2018 following a diagnosis of an aggressive form of brain cancer. Douglas was adopted by John McCain after his 1965 marriage to Carol Shepp.

The couple divorced in 1980, after which John McCain married Cindy McCain. Douglas is survived by his wife Ashley, children Caroline and Douglas, and his mother Carol Shepp, along with siblings and step-siblings.

Family members highlighted Douglas McCain's role in connecting with various circles tied to his father's legacy in politics and public service. The announcement came via social media and official family channels without additional public ceremonies detailed at this time.

Officials and associates from the McCain Institute emphasized his contributions as a patriot in their remarks following the news. No conflicting reports have emerged regarding the circumstances of his death.

Meghan McCain's tribute focused on personal memories, while the institute's message centered on his broader connections within alumni networks from campaigns and Senate work.

The news marks another loss for the McCain family, which has faced several high-profile passings in recent years, including that of Sen. John McCain himself in 2018.
