‘Dutton Ranch’ Producer Breaks Silence on Showrunner’s Shocking Firing Before Season 2

Executive producer Christina Voros addressed the departure of showrunner Chad Feehan from the Yellowstone spinoff Dutton Ranch, praising his work while providing few details on the exit. The change reportedly followed production tensions involving series creator Taylor Sheridan and lead actors.

The executive producer of the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff Dutton Ranch has spoken publicly for the first time about the abrupt departure of its original showrunner. Christina Voros addressed the exit of Chad Feehan in comments to ScreenRant, praising the writer’s contributions while offering little detail on the circumstances surrounding his removal.

Feehan, who previously collaborated with series creator Taylor Sheridan on Lawmen: Bass Reeves, completed work on the first season but will not return for season two. News of the change first surfaced in April, catching fans and industry observers off guard. Voros described Feehan’s efforts in positive terms, noting that he did “an exceptional job building a world of adversaries for Rip and Beth.”

She added that the production had not yet “come out into the world yet,” which left her without much insight into how the show would proceed without him. “Dynamics behind his departure” remained outside her direct knowledge at the time, according to Voros, who expressed thanks to Feehan and his team for “creating a world for these characters to move into.”

Reports at the time of the shakeup suggested the departure stemmed from tensions on set rather than dissatisfaction with the scripts themselves. Sources indicated that Sheridan, his producing partner David Glasser, and lead actors Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly grew unhappy with how Feehan managed the production. None of the cast members have commented publicly on the matter.

Dutton Ranch centers on Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton as they relocate to Texas following the conclusion of the original Yellowstone series in 2024. The story also follows young Carter, played by Finn Little, as the family adjusts to new surroundings and faces a rival ranch determined to protect its interests. The official synopsis describes a setting where “blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting, and the cost of survival might just be your soul.”

Additional cast members include Annette Bening, Ed Harris, Jai Courtney, Natalie Alyn Lind, Marc Menchaca, Juan Pablo Raba, and J. R. Villarreal. The series is scheduled to air Fridays on Paramount+. Production details for season two remain limited following the leadership change.

Sheridan has stayed busy with several other projects under his banner, including Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness, and Tulsa King. In October 2025 he finalized a five-year overall deal with NBCUniversal covering film, television, and streaming. That agreement begins January 1, 2029, after his current Paramount contract expires in 2028.

Paramount will keep ownership of the Yellowstone franchise and related properties created during Sheridan’s time with the company. The move follows Paramount’s merger with Skydance and positions Sheridan to develop new intellectual property for NBCUniversal.

Related programming in the expanding Sheridan universe includes Luke Grimes’ CBS series Marshals. The original Yellowstone, which debuted in 2018, established the Dutton family’s Montana ranch as the centerpiece of a growing television empire that now stretches across multiple networks and platforms.

Industry observers note that showrunner transitions are not uncommon in long-running or expanding franchises, though the timing before Dutton Ranch has reached audiences adds an extra layer of attention. Voros’ remarks represent the first on-record comments from a member of the production team since the April reports.

Further updates on season two staffing and any potential creative shifts are expected as production moves forward. The series continues to draw interest from fans eager to see how Rip and Beth’s story evolves away from Montana.
