Former NBA Star Patrick Beverley Breaks Silence on Arrest

Former NBA player Patrick Beverley detailed his side of a November 2024 family assault arrest in Texas, involving his teenage sister, which ended without charges after a grand jury found insufficient evidence. In a vlog and statements, Beverley stressed his protective intentions and family relief, highlighting the ordeal's impact on his life.

HOUSTON — Former NBA star Patrick Beverley has spoken out for the first time about his arrest last November on suspicion of assaulting a family member, emphasizing in a new video that he would never harm his younger sister and expressing relief that charges against him were dropped.

Beverley, 37, who played 12 seasons in the league including stints with the Houston Rockets from 2013 to 2017 and the Los Angeles Clippers from 2017 to 2021, was detained in Fort Bend County, Texas, on November 14, 2024. According to FOX 26 Houston, the arrest stemmed from allegations of assault family violence involving impeding breath, suggesting he allegedly tried to choke another person. Beverley posted a $40,000 bond and was released from custody just hours later.

In a vlog posted recently, Beverley recounted the events leading up to his arrest, describing a family situation involving his 15-year-old sister and her 18-year-old boyfriend. "I go over there and [my mom] explains that my sister is not in the house when she’s supposed to be," Beverley said in the video, which was filmed the day after the incident. He noted that a similar situation had occurred the previous year, resulting in police involvement and a threat from Child Protective Services to remove his sister from the home.

Beverley explained that he was called to his mother's house, located next door to his own property in the Houston area, because his sister was alone in her room with the older teenager late at night. "It’s been a constant battle dealing with a young teenager who’s in love," he said. "We get it — be in love. I love that your love is so organic, so pure, so strong and so loyal. But just wait until you’re 16. You’re growing up too fast, if you know what I mean?"

During the confrontation, Beverley described the boyfriend as "cool" and decided against pressing charges against him. "I made sure that didn’t happen because I didn’t want to mess up [the boyfriend’s] life," he insisted in the vlog. However, as the boyfriend left the house, Beverley's sister reportedly followed him. Beverley said he grabbed her by the front of her hoodie to stop her, saying, "like, ‘Where are you going?’ I’m heated. I leave the house following the young man outside."

According to Beverley, the boyfriend then called law enforcement. When police arrived, he told them nothing had happened, but he observed officers speaking with his sister. "My mom is saying, ‘That didn’t happen. What are you saying?’" Beverley recounted. "Next thing I know, I’m detained and on the way to the police car."

The arrest led to significant family disruptions, including a temporary protective order that barred Beverley from contact with his mother and sister. "My mom’s house is next door to mine, so it’s connected," he said in the footage. "I had to move them to the Chicago property. I can’t see my mom. I can’t see my sister. It’s the holidays. Like, what the f***?"

Immediately following the arrest, Beverley took to social media to urge fans not to "believe everything you see on the internet." On November 14, 2024, he shared a statement from his legal team, which read in part: "Patrick Beverley has no criminal record. He cares deeply about his little sister – a young lady, a minor. Given that, when he unexpectedly found her alone in the home with an 18-year-old man in the middle of the night, he was understandably concerned, as any brother would be about his sister. However, we don’t believe what followed happened the way it’s been described and we look forward to the opportunity to address that in court."

The case moved forward to a Fort Bend County grand jury, which in February 2025 declined to indict Beverley due to a lack of evidence, according to ESPN. Beverley's attorneys, Rusty Hardin and Letitia Quinones-Hollins, issued a statement to the outlet expressing gratitude. "Patrick wants everyone to know that he would never do anything to harm his sister and that he is very grateful that the grand jury has recognized that with their no-bill," they said on February 23, 2025. "He is thankful for all who prayed for him and supported him during this time. He is glad that the process was allowed to work as it did and his hope is that with these charges behind him now, his name and reputation will be restored."

I am deeply grateful for all thoughts and prayers for the family. We must continue to protect our children, especially our young girls. This ordeal has truly made our family stronger. Thank you for your continued support and prayers.

Beverley echoed these sentiments in his own statement to ESPN, adding the above quote about family protection and resilience.

In his vlog, Beverley addressed the public perception of the arrest, acknowledging the impact of media coverage. "Like, a part of me understands [the controversy], right?" he said. "If I’m outside looking in and I’m reading something — you know, big bold headline, mug shot — I get it. But I would never hurt my sister." He concluded by saying, "I just can’t wait for the truth to come out."

The incident occurred amid Beverley's transition to international basketball after his NBA career. Following his time with the Clippers, he briefly played for the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2022-2023 season before moving overseas. He has since suited up for Hapoel Tel Aviv B.C. in Israel and PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece, maintaining his reputation as a tenacious defender known for his intensity on the court.

Family violence allegations in sports have drawn scrutiny in recent years, with high-profile cases often sparking debates about athlete accountability and support systems for families. While Beverley's case did not result in charges, it highlights the challenges of intervening in teenage relationships within close-knit families, especially when law enforcement becomes involved. Officials in Fort Bend County have not released additional details beyond the grand jury's decision, citing privacy concerns in family matters.

Beverley's supporters, including fans and former teammates, rallied around him during the ordeal, with many expressing relief at the outcome on social media. The former All-Defensive Team selection has not commented further on his basketball future but indicated in the vlog that the experience has strengthened family bonds. As he looks ahead, the dismissal of charges allows him to focus on his career abroad without the shadow of legal proceedings.

The broader context of the arrest underscores ongoing discussions about protecting minors in potentially risky situations. Beverley emphasized the importance of guiding young relatives through adolescence, a theme that resonated with some observers who viewed his actions as protective rather than aggressive. With the legal chapter closed, Beverley appears poised to rebuild his public image, drawing on his history of resilience both on and off the court.
