In a candid revelation on the Pretty Basic podcast, Greer Grammer, the 33-year-old daughter of actor Kelsey Grammer, shared a painful memory from her reconciliation with her father after a 12-year estrangement. Greer recounted how Kelsey once suggested to her mother that it might be better for her not to carry his last name, a comment that left her in tears when she learned of it at age 19.
The estrangement began when Greer was just 4 years old, following her parents' split in the mid-1990s. Her mother, Barrie Buckner, a makeup artist, and Kelsey, then riding high from his role on Cheers, parted ways shortly after Greer's birth on February 15, 1992. For over a decade, father and daughter had no contact, a period Greer described as leaving significant gaps in their relationship.
Greer detailed the moment Kelsey shared the story during their efforts to reconnect. "[Grammer] was always my last name," she said on the podcast. "I guess my dad did ask my mom—he told me this later—but he was like, 'I told your mom...I said it might be better for you to not have my last name. It would be easier for you growing up.'"
The words hit hard. "I think I was like 19 when he told me that and I started sobbing," Greer continued, "because to me that was like the meanest thing you could ever say to somebody, like, 'I knew I wasn't gonna be in your life, so I told my mom it would probably be easier for you to not have my last name.'"
Their reconnection came unexpectedly in 2006, when Greer, then Miss Teen Malibu, was volunteering at a Christmas tree lot. Kelsey approached her, asking, "Are you Greer?" She replied affirmatively, adding, "I know who you are. Duh." They met for lunch the following week, marking the start of rebuilding their bond. Greer noted her mother's advice to take time: "It took a couple of days to call him, because my mom was like, 'Give them some time.' I was ready to call him that day, like, 'Let's do this thing. I got a dad now, woohoo!' She was kind of like, 'Take some time to think about it over the weekend. Let them process it as a family and then call.'"
Today, Greer and Kelsey maintain a positive relationship. He funded her college education, though she clarified there is no trust fund. In a May interview with People magazine, the 70-year-old actor acknowledged his past shortcomings as a father. "I have neglected a couple of the kids in my life, especially the first two," Kelsey said. "I'm trying to make up for a little of it now. I’m still their dad, so you can always have [a] chance to show up."
Kelsey's family life has been complex, spanning multiple marriages and eight children. His first marriage to dance instructor Doreen Alderman in 1982 produced daughter Spencer Grammer, born October 9, 1983. The couple separated soon after her birth and divorced in 1990. Kelsey has admitted to being absent during Spencer's early years, echoing his regrets shared with People.
Spencer, now 42, is an actress and voice artist known for roles in Greek and as Summer on Rick and Morty. She was married to firefighter James Hesketh from 2011 to 2017, and they share a son, Emmett, born in October 2011. In 2022, Spencer fulfilled a lifelong dream by starring alongside her father in the holiday film The 12 Days of Christmas Eve. "I haven't done any other Christmas movies, so it was my first experience in the Christmas world, but it made it momentous for me to actually do a movie with my father," she told E! News. "I've always wanted to work with him."
Spencer recently mourned the loss of her former stepfather, Dr. Bill Skinner, who had been a constant presence since she was 5, even after his split from Doreen. In an July 2024 Instagram post, she wrote, "He has been there for me my whole life…no matter what I needed. He was there. I always got to be his kid. He always gave me a hug, always listened, always believed in me, and always supported me."
Following his annulled marriage to Leigh-Anne Csuhany in 1993, Kelsey wed Camille Donatacci in 1997. Their union, which ended in divorce in 2010, produced two children via surrogate: daughter Mason Grammer, born October 24, 2001, and son Jude Grammer, born August 28, 2004. The divorce became public spectacle on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, where Camille was an original cast member.
Mason, now a model and Emerson College graduate, spoke about the strain the split put on her relationship with Kelsey. "It was the hardest time of my life," she told Genlux magazine in 2018, as reported by Page Six. "I changed a lot after that. I had to grow up faster because I had a lot more responsibilities. My dad wasn’t around, so I didn’t see him much, and my mom had such a hard time. I became my younger brother’s mom. Everyone was on edge. My parents still don’t talk." Despite the challenges, Mason said their bond has since mended.
Camille, now married to David Meyer since 2018, praised Mason's academic achievements, attributing her discipline to Kelsey. "[Mason] was a really good student and she must have gotten that from [her] dad because I don’t have that kind of discipline at times!" Camille told Page Six.
Jude, the more private of the siblings, has expressed interest in following his father's footsteps into acting, according to Camille in 2018. "He wants to be like his dad, an actor," she said. "But he doesn’t like being in pictures right now. He hides. If I get a picture of him out of him, I’m lucky!"
Greer, reflecting on her own path in entertainment, has appeared in shows like Awkward and a 2024 episode of the Frasier reboot on Paramount+. She recalled childhood visits to Frasier tapings around age 4, telling Nylon in 2014, “I knew I was at my dad’s work, but I didn’t get that he was acting for TV. It wasn’t until the second grade that it really hit me.” On advice from Kelsey, Greer shared with Stage Buddy in 2021: "He gives me a lot of advice but the best was one time he told me to make sure that I act because I love it. He said 'act for the right reasons.' One time we had a lengthy conversation where he was honest with me and talked to me about how unfair and cruel Hollywood can be to women, he said, “Don’t let it get to you.' I still get emotional when I think about it."
Two weeks after his divorce from Camille, Kelsey married flight attendant Kayte Walsh on February 25, 2011. Their family includes daughter Faith Evangeline Elisa Grammer, born July 13, 2012, after the tragic loss of a twin boy. The couple named their brewery, Faith American Brewery in upstate New York, opened in 2017, after her. "My daughter's name is Faith, but there's also action in Faith. Faith is something you have to fight for," Kelsey explained to Fox Business. "We fought for this beautiful child in our lives, and she's our first child. And the idea of America is still something I'm willing to fight for."
Sons Kelsey Gabriel Elias Grammer, born July 22, 2014—known by his middle name Gabriel—and Auden James Grammer, born November 14, 2016, followed. Kelsey, 25 years older than Kayte, expressed joy in fatherhood to People shortly after Gabriel's birth: “I can’t imagine not trying for more because it’s been incredible. As soon as [he] came out, Kayte and I were going, ‘Yeah, let’s do another one.' It’s just this overwhelming gratification of being close to life like this. It just gives you such hope and joy. I’ve never felt more alive or more serenely happy than in the throes of life with these young people. I really enjoy it.”
In October 2025, on the Pod Meets World podcast, Kelsey announced the birth of their fourth child together, son Christopher, making it eight children in total. "It was like three days ago, Christopher that's just joined the family," the actor said.
Older siblings have welcomed the growing family. Greer told Entertainment Tonight in 2016, "My dad's always wanted a huge family. Him and Kayte are such great parents together, and they have all these little ones, and they love them so much. They're the cutest kids, Faith and Gabe. I'm excited for them to have another one, another crazy baby." Mason added to Closer magazine in 2018 that Kelsey "becomes a better dad after every child. When I grew up, he was very strict. Now he’s more relaxed with my younger siblings. It’s a blast!"
Greer's podcast appearance highlights ongoing efforts within the Grammer family to address past absences. While challenges from Kelsey's early fatherhood persist, recent statements suggest a commitment to stronger connections, particularly as he navigates life with a blended family of eight children across four decades.
