Off Campus’ Charlie Evans Breaks His Silence on Finale Twist, Teases Hunter Davenport’s Season 2 Role

Charlie Evans discusses the Off Campus season 1 finale twist revealing his character as Hunter Davenport and teases season 2 focus on Dean's story.

Actor Charlie Evans is speaking out for the first time about the major twist that closed out the first season of the Prime Video series Off Campus. The show, which premiered in May, wrapped its initial run with a reveal that left fans buzzing and set up significant storylines for a potential second season.

In the finale, Allie, played by Mika Abdalla, connects with a mystery man amid her casual relationship with Dean, portrayed by Stephen Kalyn. The closing scene shows Dean arguing with the character previously known as Carter, who is unmasked as Hunter Davenport, played by Evans. The moment hints at deeper ties to Dean's sister Summer and her past with Hunter.

Evans told Swooon that he auditioned for the role under the name Carter St. James V and knew only basic details at first. "I went in for Carter St. James V, and I knew he was wealthy," Evans said. "I knew a little bit [that] he played for a rival team, things like that, just vague details. But no, I only found out after I got the job who he actually was."

The character Hunter Davenport is well-known to readers of Elle Kennedy's book series. In the novels, Hunter starts as Dean's teammate in The Score before taking center stage in his own story, The Play, with Summer featured in The Chase. The television adaptation has diverged from the source material in notable ways, particularly with this season-ending revelation.

Evans shared that the twist was always intended as a setup for future episodes. "This was always the setup for Season 2. We knew the plan when we started, and that was where we went," he said. "I think we were pretty clear about that from the beginning. We wanted a big climactic ending. We wanted everyone in the same place. I mean, Louisa plans this stuff well in advance. She's got the next five books down, ready to go."

Creator Louisa Levy has mapped out an extensive path forward, according to Evans. He described seeing detailed planning materials during production. "I've been in those rooms and seen the boards, and they have the books out, and they're pulling pages, and it's really impressive," Evans noted.

Season two is expected to focus heavily on Dean's background and relationships. "What I know is that [creator] Louisa [Levy] has a pretty stellar layout for season 2 that she's ready to shoot, and it's all about Dean," Evans teased. "It's all about Dean's world and Dean's history, and everyone close to him, and not so close to him, and I'm very excited for people to see that story."

Evans left open the possibility of exploring Hunter's past with Summer on screen. "I think anything's possible. I think the way that we're doing this show, Louisa has very cleverly set up these characters to be malleable and to react to their environments," he said. "There's a lot of topical, beautiful story shifts that she's made that translate incredibly well on-screen, and that she's going to continue to make."

The actor also reflected on the emotional layers of his character. Evans spoke about Hunter's vulnerability and history, noting the chance to show more depth. "All that stuff with Allie, that vulnerability and that trauma, honestly, because he does have a bit of a sad history and letting those walls break down a bit," he said.

Further comments from Evans highlighted the character's growth. "Seeing him just drop the BS and get into a place of realness, just kind of shedding all of these structural walls that he's built up because of his family and what's expected of him, and all of that stuff, and just kind of finding who he is," Evans added.

Off Campus remains available to stream on Prime Video. Questions about which cast members will return for season two have circulated among fans, though no official confirmations have been issued beyond the creative team's ongoing work. Evans expressed gratitude for being part of the project and its detailed planning process.

The adaptation continues to draw from Kennedy's popular series while making adjustments for television pacing and structure. Officials involved in the production have emphasized that these changes were intentional from the start to create compelling cliffhangers and character arcs.
