In the rugged heart of Queensland's Cape York Peninsula, a remote rock shelter has unveiled a treasure trove of ancient Aboriginal artifacts, offering a rare glimpse into 1,700 years of traditional string crafting. Excavated in 2022 at the site known as Windmill Way, the discovery includes more than 500 fragments of plant-fiber string and related objects, preserved under ideal environmental conditions that have kept organic materials intact for millennia. Researchers from Griffith University and Flinders University, working alongside Indigenous custodians, announced their findings this week as part of the Agayrr Bamangay Milbi Project, highlighting the unbroken continuity of Kuku Warra cultural practices.

The Windmill Way site lies in the National Heritage-listed Quinkan Country, a spectacular landscape of sandstone outcrops and woodlands accessible only by dusty gravel roads from the tiny town of Laura, home to just 133 residents. Traditional custodians, including Laura Land and Sea Ranger Christine Musgrave and Kuku Warra Native Title holder Roseanne George, guided the team to this secluded spot. As Lynley Wallis, a professor of archaeology at Flinders University, described in the study published in Australian Archaeology, the site's conditions are "just right" for preserving perishable items that typically vanish from the archaeological record.

Most Aboriginal artifacts unearthed in Australia are stone tools, which endure harsh conditions better than the plant and animal materials that dominated daily life. According to the research team, over 90% of traditional objects were made from such organic substances, making sites like Windmill Way exceptionally valuable. The fragments recovered include strings twisted from local plant fibers, bundles of prepared bark, and pieces of finished items that reveal sophisticated crafting techniques passed down through generations.

Direct radiocarbon dating of 13 string samples places the oldest pieces at approximately 1,700 years old, with the most recent dating to the contact period after 1873, when European explorer William Hann's discovery of gold on the Palmer River drew about 20,000 miners to the region. Charcoal from ancient campfires at the site extends human occupation back to 2,100 years ago. The presence of a hooked piece of thick wire and a strip of red cloth—both European imports—indicates continued use of the shelter during this turbulent era of colonial expansion.

Following the gold rush, the local Aboriginal population faced devastating impacts from Native Mounted Police, miners, pastoralists, disease, and government policies that displaced survivors to missions or a fringe camp outside Laura. This historical context underscores the resilience of the traditions preserved at Windmill Way, where crafting methods remained largely unchanged over centuries. The strings' knots, mesh, gauge, and loops show minimal evolution, suggesting a stable knowledge system amid external pressures.

To identify the fragmented artifacts, the researchers compared them to complete fibercraft objects collected in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, now held in the Queensland Museum. These earlier collections captured items before mass-produced goods supplanted handmade ones. Nicholas Hadnutt, the museum's acting senior curator of archaeology and a co-author of the study, emphasized the project's significance: "This project enabled us to leverage the museum’s extensive collections to support Traditional Owners in telling their generations-old stories. In this way we were able to connect ancient artefacts with complete objects collected far more recently."

Many fragments appear to come from dillybags, versatile carry-all bags akin to modern backpacks, used by men, women, and children. These were often striped using fibers from different plant species, eliminating the need for dyes. Other pieces suggest fishing nets for the nearby Laura River, though entangled bird feathers hint at possible use in bird netting as well. Rarer items include tassel string belts worn by adults in ceremonies or as everyday pubic coverings, and even by young boys during initiations. Some may derive from mourning necklaces, traditional adornments for men and women during post-death rituals.

The site's role as a potential "string manufacturing workshop" is evident from the presence of raw materials like bark strips ready for twisting into cordage. This assemblage not only documents tool-making but also the cultural importance of string in Aboriginal life—from practical storage to ceremonial wear. As Heather Burke, a professor of archaeology at Flinders University, noted in the research, such preservation is extraordinarily rare, providing direct evidence of everyday practices that stone artifacts alone cannot convey.

Adding to the site's richness, the rock shelter's walls feature vivid Quinkan-style paintings that depict similar string-based objects. These artworks, characterized by solid bright colors, white outlines, and decorative infill, show women adorned with tassel belts, mourning strings across their chests, and headbands. Dillybags are also illustrated, linking the physical artifacts to visual storytelling. The Quinkan galleries, scattered across the peninsula, are renowned for their dynamic figures and have long been central to Kuku Warra identity.

The discovery comes at a pivotal time for Cape York, where large areas are protected as national parks and under consideration for World Heritage status. Custodians like Musgrave and George, who hold Native Title rights, view the findings as vital to reclaiming and sharing ancestral knowledge disrupted by colonization. The Agayrr Bamangay Milbi Project, funded in part by the Australian Research Council, involves collaboration between academics and Indigenous rangers to document and protect such sites.

Wallis, who receives funding from the Australian Research Council and is affiliated with the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists, highlighted the broader implications during a recent interview tied to the study's release. She explained how the site's layered history—from pre-contact continuity to post-1873 adaptation—illustrates Aboriginal agency in the face of invasion. Burke echoed this, pointing to the wire and cloth as symbols of hybrid practices during the contact period.

While the artifacts are fragmented due to time's inevitable toll, even under optimal conditions, their survival offers unparalleled insights. The research team analyzed plant species used, confirming reliance on local flora like those from the Pandanus and Cyperus families, twisted into durable cords. Experts in Indigenous heritage praise the project for centering Traditional Owners. George, a custodian, has advocated for such initiatives to ensure cultural stories endure. Looking ahead, the Windmill Way discovery could bolster bids for expanded protections in Quinkan Country. With tourism to Laura growing—drawn by rock art trails—the site exemplifies why Cape York's cultural landscapes merit global recognition. As national parks expand and World Heritage deliberations proceed, these artifacts remind us of the deep human history etched into Australia's north.

In a statement, the Queensland Museum reiterated its commitment to partnering with Indigenous communities. Hadnutt added that future analyses might employ advanced microscopy to reveal more about fiber processing techniques.
