Drawing inspiration from symbols like Fair Trade or Organic certifications, these professionals argue that such a badge could help distinguish their efforts from the flood of AI-generated content saturating online platforms. However, as initiatives proliferate, the lack of consensus on verification methods and definitions of 'human-made' is complicating efforts to establish a unified system.
The call for an 'AI-free' label gained traction late last year when Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, suggested in December that it might be more practical to 'fingerprint real media than fake media' as AI technology advances to the point where synthetic content becomes visually indistinguishable from human work. Mosseri's comments, shared on Instagram, highlighted the challenges of detecting AI-generated material amid improving algorithms. This sentiment echoes concerns raised by creators who fear their livelihoods are at risk from AI tools that can produce content at scale and low cost.
According to a recent survey by the Reuters Institute, there's widespread public perception that news sites, social media, and search engine results are filled with AI-generated material, though exact figures remain elusive. No reliable estimate exists for how much online content is AI-produced, but the skepticism has led to demands for transparency. In response, various organizations have launched certification programs, with at least 12 different AI-free labeling alternatives now vying for adoption, each with its own criteria and approaches.
Some initiatives are tailored to specific industries. For instance, the Authors Guild offers a 'human authored certification' for books and written works, focusing on literary content. Broader efforts, like Proudly Human and Not by AI, aim to cover text, visual art, videography, and music. Yet, these programs face hurdles in verification. Services such as Made by Human rely on self-reporting, allowing anyone to download and apply badges without rigorous checks, which raises questions about authenticity.
Others, including No-AI-Icon, claim to visually inspect submissions and use AI detection tools, but experts note that such detectors are often unreliable, producing false positives and negatives. The most thorough methods involve manual audits where creators submit evidence like sketches, drafts, or process documentation to human reviewers. 'It’s extremely labor-intensive, but without any technological shortcuts, it’s the most reliable method we currently have,' according to reporting from The Verge.
Defining what qualifies as 'human-made' adds another layer of complexity, especially as AI integrates into creative workflows. Jonathan Stray, a senior scientist at the UC Berkeley Center for Human-Compatible AI, pointed out the definitional challenges in an interview with The Verge. 'The problem is going to be definition and verification. Does chatting with an LLM about the idea before executing it manually count as using AI? And how could the creator prove no AI was involved?' Stray asked. He compared it to consumer labels like 'Organic,' which are backed by regulations and enforcement agencies.
UC Berkeley School of Information lecturer Nina Beguš described the shift toward hybrid content in her comments to The Verge. 'Any creative output today can be touched by AI in one way or another without us being able to prove it,' she said. 'Authorship is disintegrating into new directions, becoming more technologically enhanced and more collective. We need to revamp our creativity criteria that were made solely for humans.' Beguš's perspective underscores how traditional notions of authorship are evolving in the AI age.
Not by AI attempts to address this ambiguity by offering badges for works where at least 90 percent is created by humans, applicable to websites, art, films, essays, books, and podcasts. However, the program is voluntary and lacks mandatory verification, relying on creators' honesty. In contrast, Proof I Did It employs blockchain technology to create unforgeable digital certificates, storing verification records on a decentralized ledger that anyone can reference.
Thomas Beyer, an executive director at the University of California’s Rady School of Management, advocated for blockchain's potential in an interview with The Verge. 'By issuing ‘Made by Human’ tokens to verified creators, the market creates a ‘premium tier’ of art where authenticity is mathematically guaranteed,' Beyer said. This approach shifts the focus from detecting AI to proving a human provenance, potentially increasing the value of certified works amid the rise of synthetic media. Beguš echoed this, noting the potential premium on 'human and biological creativity.'
Existing standards like the Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) framework, supported by companies including Meta, Adobe, Microsoft, and Google, were intended to authenticate content origins but have seen limited success. Implemented on Meta's platforms, C2PA aims to track media from creation to distribution, yet its adoption falters because many AI content producers and platforms benefit from concealing synthetic origins for clicks, revenue, or influence. Regulators worldwide are pushing AI providers to implement such standards, but enforcement remains inconsistent.
The reluctance to disclose AI use is evident in real-world examples. Romance author Coral Hart reportedly earned six figures last year by producing over 200 AI-generated novels, according to The New York Times, but she avoids labeling them as such due to the 'strong stigma' around the technology, fearing it would harm her business. Similarly, AI-generated pornographic content featuring digital clones of actors, AI influencers promoting fictional lifestyles, and scammers using synthetic images on platforms like Etsy often go unlabeled to maintain deception. Social media mischief, including discord-sowing posts, thrives when believed to be human-created.
Even proponents of human-made labels acknowledge vulnerabilities to abuse. Trevor Woods, CEO of Proudly Human, told The Verge that preventing fraudulent use of their certification mark is challenging. 'Like other certification marks and company logos, we cannot prevent fraudulently displaying the Proudly Human certification mark. However, we make it easy for consumers to verify it,' Woods said. He added that the organization would pursue legal action against identified bad actors who refuse to comply.
Proudly Human has briefed government and industry groups on its model but is not engaged in formal talks for a unified standard, according to Woods. 'The rapid evolution of AI capabilities and AI-generated content will outpace government and regulator responses,' he warned. Broader discussions involving creators, platforms, governments, and regulators are sparse, leaving the field fragmented.
Despite these obstacles, the demand for reliable human-made certifications persists, driven by creators' need to compete in an industry increasingly dominated by AI. As synthetic content proliferates—often derided as 'slop' despite its sophistication—these labels could restore consumer trust and elevate authentic works. Experts suggest that rallying behind a single, enforceable standard, akin to global symbols for ethical production, might be key to success.
Looking ahead, the interplay between technological innovation and creative authenticity will likely intensify. With AI tools embedded in education and professional software, redefining creativity could become inevitable. Until a consensus emerges, creators must navigate a landscape where proving human effort remains as much an art as the work itself.
