Spencer Pratt Fires Back Over Whether He’s a Republican or Democrat: ‘I Hate Politicians’

Spencer Pratt rejected party labels in the Los Angeles mayoral race, stating he hates politicians while explaining his past Republican registration stemmed from gun permit needs. Opponents have labeled him a MAGA Republican as the June 2 primary nears.

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt fired back Saturday against efforts to claim him for either political party, insisting he has no affiliation with Republicans or Democrats as the June 2 primary approaches.

“Everyone is trying to claim me for their tribe. There’s no R next to my name, there’s no D next to my name,” Pratt wrote on X. “I’m not part of a political party, because I hate politicians. I’m just Spencer, husband to Heidi [Montag], father to Ryker and Gunner, and I’m a pissed off Angeleno who loves my city and is fed up with what corrupt politicians have done to her.”

Pratt, 42, has been registered as a Republican since 2020 but is running for mayor as an independent community advocate. His comments came after repeated attacks from opponents who have described him as a “MAGA Republican” in campaign ads.

The two leading candidates, Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilwoman Nithya Raman, have used those labels in their advertising. Pratt addressed his past alignment with Republicans in an earlier interview with CNN’s Elex Michaelson, explaining it stemmed from personal safety concerns rather than broader ideology.

“When I was a hated reality star, I got so many death threats. I had so much security and police and what did they tell me to do? Get a gun,” Pratt said. “L.A. was dangerous so I got a gun. My wife needed a gun.”

He noted that obtaining a Concealed Carry Weapon license required support that came mainly from Republicans at the time. “That was what I aligned with. My safety, my family’s personal safety,” Pratt added. “I know people don’t like guns but when people are threatening your life and your own security you need to have home protection.”

President Donald Trump recently offered public comments on Pratt during a White House press conference on May 20. “I’d like to see him do well. He’s a character,” Trump said. “I assume he probably supports me. I heard he’s a big MAGA person. He’s doing well.”

Pratt has drawn endorsements from several celebrities, including Meghan McCain, Erika Kirk, Kristin Cavallari and Jax Taylor. At the same time, he has faced sharp criticism over his lack of political experience.

Price Is Right host Drew Carey posted on Threads on May 22 that anyone supporting Pratt should reconsider. “Anyone who votes for, or endorses Spencer Prattfall for Mayor of LA needs to get their head out of their ass,” Carey wrote. “I understand being angry/unsatisfied, but at least get behind someone competent and not some serial scammer without a soul or moral compass.”

Carey concluded his post with stronger language: “F*** this guy already.”

According to Newsweek’s election tracker, Pratt continues to trail Bass, who is 72, in recent polling. The primary election is scheduled for June 2. If no candidate secures a majority, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff on November 3 regardless of party registration.

Pratt has positioned his campaign around frustration with city leadership and public safety issues. His independent stance comes as voters prepare to decide which candidates will move forward in the mayoral contest.
