Weekend Update Joke Swap’s Biggest Casualty Was Nearly Colin Jost’s “Award-Winning” Hair: “Send In The Barber”

SNL's Weekend Update joke swap nearly resulted in Colin Jost shaving his hair after provocative jokes with Michael Che. The segment featured cameos and other sketches during season 51.

During the latest edition of "Saturday Night Live," the long-running Weekend Update segment delivered its signature mix of sharp humor and unpredictable antics, with co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che trading barbs in their annual joke swap that nearly cost Jost his trademark hairstyle.

The bit unfolded on the show’s stage in New York, where Jost and Che took turns reading jokes written by the other, a tradition that has previously targeted everyone from Jost’s wife Scarlett Johansson to executive producer Lorne Michaels. This time, the focus shifted to Jost’s "award-winning" hair after a series of provocative lines pushed the segment into risky territory.

One joke Jost was forced to deliver referenced Michael B. Jordan’s Oscar win, claiming the difference between a Black vampire and a white vampire is that the former "sucks dry … the welfare state." Another had Jost offering "a beautiful ferry to give any Black person a one-way trip to the motherland." Che, meanwhile, read lines about the Michael Jackson biopic that included the statement "Michael Jackson did nothing wrong. He was right to molest all those kids."

To atone for one particularly edgy joke about Ye, Jost agreed to a dramatic sacrifice. "That’s right: I’m shaving it off," he said on air. "Send in the barber!" A barber named Jerome appeared with clippers and a black cape, prompting Jost to declare, "Jerome, make me unpretty!"

Che intervened before the clippers could connect, asking, "You was really gonna do it?" He followed up with praise: "Man, you are the greatest comedian of all time." Jost later admitted, "I was so scared."

The exchange highlighted the no-holds-barred nature of the joke swap, which sources say often walks a line between comedy and controversy. According to the report from Deadline, the segment kept viewers guessing until the final moments when Che pulled Jost back from the impromptu haircut.

Other moments from the same episode added to the night’s energy. Molly Shannon made a surprise cameo as a handsy high school theater teacher in a resurrected cut-for-time sketch. Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, crashed Will Ferrell’s opening monologue by pretending to be the host.

The cold open featured Ferrell as Jeffrey Epstein interacting with a Trump character, while additional sketches touched on current events and pop culture. Reports indicate the episode drew strong viewership, consistent with recent SNL seasons that have leaned into celebrity cameos and timely satire.

Viewers familiar with the show’s history noted that past joke swaps have included equally bold material without physical consequences. This installment stood out because of the visual gag involving Jost’s hair, which he has cultivated over years on the program.

Officials at NBC have not commented on whether the near-haircut was fully scripted or partly improvised, though the presence of the barber and cape suggested preparation. The moment ended with laughter from both anchors and the studio audience.

Looking ahead, the show is expected to continue its mix of political humor and musical performances in upcoming episodes. Jost and Che are scheduled to return to the Weekend Update desk next week, where similar segments could test new boundaries.

Industry observers point out that such bits help keep "SNL" relevant in a crowded late-night landscape. The combination of established cast members and surprise guests has been credited with maintaining audience interest across more than 50 seasons.

For now, Jost’s hair remains intact, and the clip of the near-shave is already circulating online among fans. The episode also included a performance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, adding to the night’s star power.
