Will Trent’s Scott Foley Breaks His Silence on Controversial Onscreen Death After Multiple Cast Exits

Scott Foley responded to backlash over his character's death on Will Trent via Instagram after the May 5 finale. Co-star Iantha Richardson discussed the emotional impact of multiple recent exits and hopes for future storylines.

Scott Foley has broken his silence following the controversial death of his character on the ABC drama Will Trent, a move that has drawn backlash amid a string of recent cast exits from the series. The actor posted on Instagram after the May 5 season finale, which featured the birth of Angie’s baby and the sudden collapse and death of her husband Seth, played by Foley.

“What a wonderful gift to receive after a wonderful experience on #willtrent,” Foley wrote alongside a photo of his name in the show’s title card. “Thanks to the cast and crew, the writers and creators who made the experience so special.” He added that the tribute “will surely make my wife and daughter say ‘Awww’ each time they pass by and really, that’s enough for me.”

The episode marked the end of Seth’s storyline on the show, which is based on novels by Karin Slaughter and centers on a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Foley’s exit follows the earlier killing off of Amanda, portrayed by Sonja Sohn, who had been with the series since its debut. The back-to-back departures have left some viewers and cast members unsettled.

Co-star Iantha Richardson, who plays Faith, addressed the recent losses during an interview with Us Weekly. “It’s just Game of Thrones out here,” she said. “I have no clue if death is imminent on this show but I hope not.” Richardson noted that the reasoning behind Seth’s death, as she understood it, was to create emotional depth for upcoming storylines.

“It sets up a beautiful emotional arc for people in the coming season of what’s to come. So there’s a lot to look forward to,” Richardson said.

She also spoke about the difficulty of losing colleagues in quick succession. “Losing people like that definitely keeps you on your toes. Nobody expected to lose one person — let alone two — in very different genres of what the show has. But to lose two in a matter of three weeks is just gut wrenching over and over again,” Richardson said. The actress added that the series is known for emotional roller-coasters, though she hopes future developments will not involve additional deaths.

Richardson, 35, said she does not expect her own character to meet a similar fate. “I am never too comfortable in any space because you really just never know. But I don’t think a possible death for Faith is at the forefront of my mind,” she told the outlet. “I don’t think that would happen. But who knows. If it’s meant for the greater good of Will Trent then I’m sure there will be a great reason behind it and it’ll all happen in the best way. But I hope not.”

The series follows Will Trent, played by Ramon Rodríguez, who was abandoned at birth and raised in Atlanta’s foster care system. His unique perspective has helped the Georgia Bureau of Investigation achieve its highest clearance rate. Other cast members include Erika Christensen as Angie, Jake McLaughlin, Sonja Sohn and Kevin Daniels.

According to reports, Will Trent has been renewed for season 3 and is currently streaming on Hulu. The show has built a dedicated audience since its premiere, drawing on the popularity of Slaughter’s books while developing its own television narrative that mixes procedural cases with personal drama.

Viewers expressed surprise at the rapid turnover of characters this season, particularly after Amanda’s exit earlier in the year. The May 5 finale compounded that reaction when Seth died shortly after the birth of his child with Angie, shifting the focus toward how the remaining characters will cope in future episodes.

Richardson emphasized that the departures, while painful, could serve the larger story. She described the upcoming season as one filled with emotional recoil and new developments for the ensemble. Officials with the production have not commented publicly on whether additional exits are planned.

The Instagram tribute to Foley appears to have offered some closure for fans who followed his character’s arc. The post highlighted the positive experience he had on set and the lasting memento that now hangs in his home. Cast members have continued to praise the collaborative environment even as the narrative takes unexpected turns.

As the series moves forward on Hulu and prepares for its next season, questions remain about how the writers will handle the aftermath of these losses. Richardson said she remains focused on the opportunities ahead rather than speculating about further changes. The show’s renewal suggests producers see continued potential in the story despite the recent shifts in the cast.
