Microsoft has recruited game industry analyst Matthew Ball to serve as Xbox chief strategy officer, a move that represents the second major leadership change at the division this month. The hire comes as Xbox CEO Asha Sharma continues to reshape the team following her appointment roughly 90 days ago.
Sharma announced the appointment in a memo to Xbox employees, describing Ball as a longtime gamer who has held strategy and leadership roles at Illumination, Amazon Studios, Otter Media, and Accenture Strategy. According to Sharma, Ball has already been partnering with the team on strategy since early in her tenure. He is expected to begin officially this month and will report directly to her.
Ball is known for publishing an annual state of video gaming report that has become a popular read across the industry. Sharma called him widely respected across gaming, media, and technology sectors. The addition of Ball is seen by some observers as a signal that Xbox is still refining its long-term direction beyond recent public messaging about a return to core strengths.
In the same memo, Sharma revealed that Scott Van Vliet is joining as the new chief technology officer. Van Vliet previously led Azure AI infrastructure at Microsoft and has more than two decades of experience building technology and consumer platforms across cloud, commerce, gaming, and entertainment. He also worked at Amazon on projects including Fire TV and the Appstore.
Sharma noted that Van Vliet has been part of the Xbox community since the original Xbox Live beta in 2002. He will begin ramping up immediately and formally start after the upcoming Showcase event. There are no changes planned for Hardware, Helix, or OS teams, which will continue reporting to Sharma.
Sharma is also promoting Chris Schnakenberg to corporate vice president of partnerships and business development. These moves follow earlier additions of executives who previously worked with Sharma in Microsoft’s CoreAI division. The CEO indicated that further adjustments may be coming.
Sharma said the changes are aimed at strengthening the foundation by creating more clarity and improving execution. She added that as the team heads toward Showcase and beyond, additional steps will be taken to position Xbox for the future.
The leadership shifts occur amid ongoing efforts to define Xbox’s path forward in a competitive gaming landscape.
